What is Russia Today?

Russia Today (R.T) is a a news outlet run by the Russian government. They claim 700 million worldwide viewers, in over 100 countries, and their youtube page has over a million subscribers. The stations claims the network covers the stories that the mainstream media ignores, and such a branding technique has struck a chord with the youth of many countries – but many don’t understand the bias associated with many of their stories.

When Glen Beck, then an anchor at Fox news, accused Russia Today of being in lockstep with the Obama administration on the topic of racism impacting American elections, Alyona Minkovski, who hosts a daily R.T program called The Alyona Show, laid into Beck.

“Fox  …you hate Americans. Glenn Beck, you hate Americans. Because you lie to them, you scare them, you try to warp their minds. You tell them that we’re becoming some socialist country…. You’re not on the side of America. And the fact that my channel is more honest with the American people is something you should be ashamed of,” the anchor angrily said on air.

Russia Today, a state run news outlet from a country where journalists have more “accidental” deaths than anywhere else in the world, was defending Americans’ right to information.

Instead of a being an obvious propaganda machine, Russia Today became R.T, an edgy, alternative news source – defending Americans from “meddling” corporations and “corrupt” banking systems. The impact on ratings was massive, and R.T. has become a serious player in the news game.

Spanning over a hundred countries, R.T has utilized a similar strategy of attacking government and banking systems while supposedly supporting the people. However, R.T, despite the appearance of an unbiased news organization, contains a startling amount of propaganda.

R.T famously called Germany, Europe’s top economy, a failed state. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was presented as an altruistic rescue of Russian speakers oppressed by a fascist state. In fact, a 2014 story described how President Putin won’t demand an early debt repayment from Ukraine because it doesn’t want to cause Kiev difficulties.

An anchor on the Spanish-language even hinted that the US might be behind the Ebola outbreak. Despite the wide variety of false claims, the most consistent theme on the network is that the United States and European Union are always on the verge of complete financial ruin.

Spending over a hundred billion dollars, Russia has used this brand to spread their message throughout the globe; to believe this is an attempt to create credible, unbiased news would be foolish. While R.T might appear to be news, know you’re merely watching a Moscow based propaganda machine at work.
