The Incredible, Disappearing Constitution

The Incredible, Disappearing Constitution

Whether you are a liberal or a conservative, you have to notice, without any doubt,  you are losing rights. There is even a simple formula  used to make sure you even support losing these rights. Here’s how it goes:  If you are shamed or afraid enough, many will proudly give up the very rights the constitution promised.

On the campaign trail in Iowa, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton compared the National Rifle Association (NRA) to “the Iranians or the communists.”

Though met with applause, the implication is striking: by supporting the 2nd Amendment, someone becomes equivalent to a radical Islamic country or followers of a philosophy that caused the deaths of millions worldwide. Indeed, by supporting the constitution, you are now an enemy of the state.  You don’t want to be an enemy of the state, right?

Do you remember the 4th Amendment? While it’s been so long since this amendment has mattered, I recall it having something to do with stopping unreasonable searches and seizures unless a warrant is issued based on probable cause. With massive collections of all Americans’ phone records, we have seen a complete dismissal of our 4th Amendment. Heck, we even have spy drones watching us. I didn’t realize I joined the Islamic State…

Such a loss means little to Governor Chris Christie. “We need to toughen our anti-terror and surveillance laws to give our services the legal mechanisms to do their job,” Christie said in a foreign policy-themed speech.

The fear argument is a favorite of legislators seeking to mitigate your rights. However, data actually does not support this mitigation.

Independent reviews have found that the bulk collection program did not foil a single terrorist attack. So how has the Patriot Act fared as a defense against terrorism? The act has been used in 1,618 drug cases and only 15 terrorism cases. So we’ve achieved adding almost two thousand non-violent offenders to the United States’ already world-record amount of incarcerated people. That does not seem to justify losing an amendment.

“The vast majority of Americans are not worried about the government listening in on them, because it hasn’t happened. They are worried about what happens if we don’t catch the bad people who want to harm our country,” Christie continued.  America needs to worry about politicians who want to harm our country.

The 1st Amendment has always been on shaky ground. If you ask someone what qualifies as speech not covered by the 1st Amendment,  they will surely regurgitate the misleading “ shouting fire in a crowded theater”  quote.  Oliver Wendell Holmes famously said that line equating the actions of a young communist handing out fliers to falsely shouting fire in a crowded theater. Essentially, disagreeing with popular policy constitutes justification to strip someone’s right to free speech.

Ask yourself, even if you are not a Christian, should any American lose their job for holding religious beliefs ? Yet every day, without fail, Christians are told they are fascist bigots and unceremoniously dismissed from positions because they might not support abortion or disagree with gay marriage. This is not what America is founded on. The state of California is currently forcing churches to pay for the abortions of employees. Appropriately, the churches are suing back. Bakers are forced to bake certain cakes. Even if you’re an extreme liberal, let a baker bake what he wants.

At least the 3rd Amendment is going strong. There have been no reports of civilians being forced to house military. However, if you ever find soldiers in your bedroom, you only have yourself to blame for allowing each and every right the founding fathers gave us to slip away. Next time you are called a terrorist supporter or told to be afraid, remember it’s all just a trick.
