Off-Label Anti-Depressants a Bad Idea

Off-Label Anti-Depressants a Bad Idea

(HealthRev) – There are three little words that your doctor will absolutely struggle to say, and it’s not anything you’re thinking of right now.

He’s got no problem saying, “you’ve got cancer,” or any other terrible diagnosis.

But there’s a much simpler turn of phrase that he finds far more difficult.

“I don’t know.”

Docs don’t want to admit when they’re stumped. I’m convinced some might even be physically incapable of it.

He might not tell you he’s clueless, but new research shows there’s an easy way to figure it out.

If he hands you an antidepressant… and you’re NOT depressed… he’s pretty much picking your treatment with a dartboard.

They’re the go-to drugs for stumped docs, and the new study shows it: Nearly a THIRD of all antidepressant prescriptions are for off-label conditions.

Now, I’m not going to knock “off-label” entirely. There might be times when there’s evidence a drug can work for a condition even if it’s not technically approved for it.

But that’s NOT what’s going on here.

It’s just the opposite, with only 16 percent of the off-label prescriptions backed by strong evidence.

The rest are being given for conditions that AREN’T backed by strong evidence.

With 30 million Americans on the drugs, that means 10 million are getting them off-label, and 8.4 million are taking them for conditions where there’s no strong evidence.

In 40 percent of all cases, the study finds, there’s some evidence backing an antidepressant in the same class, but not the actual drug the doc has prescribed.

And 44 percent of the time, there’s no strong evidence at all — not for the drug he’s prescribed, and not for any other med in its class either.

This isn’t just irresponsible and reckless.

It’s borderline insanity.

These are patients suffering from real and debilitating conditions, including sleep disorders, migraines, chronic fatigue, pain and pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, and more.

They need answers.

Instead, they’re getting the runaround: They’re getting drugs that don’t work for conditions they don’t even have.

That’s not just a waste of time and money. It’s a guarantee that many will continue to suffer and some will even get worse.

If you find yourself getting the runaround from your own doc… if he wants to give you antidepressants for any condition that doesn’t involve actual depression… it’s time to get real answers.

You won’t find them from a pill-pushing mainstream doc, as the new study shows all too clearly.

But you will get them from a skilled holistic medical doctor.
